Homayoun Ershadi (همایون ارشادی) Biography, the Baba Kite Runner

Homayoun Ershadi remains one of the most unforgettable figures in Iranian and global cinema. Known for his calm presence, expressive face, and emotionally powerful performances, he rose to international fame in a way that almost no one could have predicted. His path began with architecture, moved across continents, and eventually brought him onto the world stage as an admired actor in films such as Taste of Cherry, The Kite Runner (The Baba Kite Runner), Zero Dark Thirty, and Agora. His life story reflects determination, artistic depth, and remarkable transformation.

This comprehensive biography explores his early life, unexpected entry into acting, major film achievements, international contributions, personal life, and lasting influence on world cinema.

Early Life and Educational Journey

Homayoun Ershadi was born on 26 March 1947 in Isfahan, one of Iran’s most historically rich cities. Even as a young man, his interests were rooted in design, structure, and creativity. Instead of choosing a path related to performance, he pursued architecture. His academic journey took him to Italy, where he studied architecture at the Ca Foscari University of Venice. He graduated in 1970 and returned to Iran to start his professional architectural career.

For several years, Ershadi worked successfully as an architect. His life seemed firmly set in this profession until the political shifts of the Iranian Revolution.

Life in Canada and Personal Transitions

In 1979, following the Iranian Revolution, Ershadi moved with his wife to Vancouver, Canada. There, he continued working as an architect, maintaining a stable life built around family and professional practice. However, his time in Canada also marked an emotional turning point. In 1990, he and his wife filed for divorce. After the separation, he returned to Iran and settled in Tehran.

This return not only marked a personal transition but also brought him closer to an unexpected discovery that would change his life forever.

Unexpected Discovery by Abbas Kiarostami

Homayoun Ershadi’s entry into acting is one of the most iconic stories in modern Iranian cinema. While he was sitting in his car in Tehran traffic, legendary filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami noticed him. Inspired by Ershadi’s expression, presence, and natural aura, Kiarostami approached him with an offer to play the lead character in his new film Taste of Cherry.

Ershadi had never trained as an actor, nor had he ever imagined himself in cinema. Yet the opportunity felt meaningful and transformative, so he accepted. This decision opened doors that would reshape his career and leave a lasting impact on international film.

Breakthrough Role in Taste of Cherry

Taste of Cherry was released in 1997 and quickly became a milestone in world cinema. The film won the Palme d Or at the Cannes Film Festival, one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry. Ershadi played the character Mr Badii, a man quietly reflecting on life as he searches for someone willing to help him end his life.

His performance received global praise for its emotional honesty and depth. Critics highlighted his ability to communicate profound internal struggle without dramatic gestures or loud intensity. This role established him as one of the most captivating new faces in world cinema.
